Access. That's what gates provide. Whether it's as an entrance or exit, a gate will allow you to pass through a barrier. There are simple picket fence or chain-link gates and elaborate custom designs that might intimidate potential intruders with an implied "keep out" message. It's usually easy enough to lift a latch or turn a knob on the gate for passage. But if the gate's locked, access is denied.
